What is hard water?

Hard water is water that has high levels of dissolved minerals, particularly calcium. The Costa Blanca is one of the hardest water areas of Spain as can be seen on the map below.

Hard water problems

Hard water causes scale to build up in pipes, especially hot water systems such as boilers, shower heads etc. Scale forms on internal heating elements, baths, basins, taps and shower screens

Heating scale wastes money and increases boiler running time. With no scale in its heating exchanger, a domestic hot water boiler takes 1 1/2 hours to fully heat up, with just 5mm of scale the boiler has to run for 4 hours wasting 2 1/2 hours of electricity or gas.
